Gilbert Onggara

Gilbert Onggara – (19) is a writer/director who was born in Medan, Indonesia, but is now living and pursuing a career in Vancouver, Canada. Growing up in a city where films are at the time still under-appreciated, it proves a challenge for him to cultivate his interest in filmmaking; as a high-schooler having a passion that nobody around seems to understand.

Hence comes the decision of moving and studying abroad, and after some research, Vancouver seems the perfect fit. He was accepted into the Langara Film Arts directing program in 2022, and continued his study there in the following year in the writing program. During his study, he has directed three short films, written two, and been a DP for multiple student films. He has also written and directed two more shorts that were produced in Indonesia before his time in Langara. One of them, an award-winning film, “Shutter”, at Filmthuer 17. Following his studies, he is excited to start his career in the film industry, particularly in the camera department.
